Xiaomi Unveils its First Electric Car -The Xiaomi SU7

In a recent event, Xiaomi has unveiled its eagerly awaited inaugural electric vehicle, the SU7. Positioned as a “high-performance ecological technology sedan” within the C-class category, the SU7 boasts an elegant design, remarkable performance, and avant-garde technology.

During the launch proceedings, Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun, underscored the company’s commitment to creating a vehicle with enduring appeal. The vision is for the SU7 to exude contemporary aesthetics today and still captivate admirers a decade or half a century into the future.

To realize this vision, Xiaomi has curated an elite design team comprising industry mavens from renowned automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Additionally, the consultancy of Chris Bangle, a globally acclaimed car designer, has been enlisted to impart finesse to the SU7.

Xiaomi SU7 Aesthetic Design Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi’s inaugural electric vehicle presents a visually striking profile. The SU7 showcases a meticulously sculpted silhouette with an elongated wheelbase of 3000mm and abbreviated overhangs, reminiscent of a sporty coupe. Distinctive features include water drop-shaped headlights and halo-shaped taillights measuring 2.48m, adding a futuristic touch to the aesthetics.

Beyond the sleek exterior, the SU7 incorporates astute design choices like semi-concealed door handles and a chic, pebble-shaped rearview mirror. Xiaomi asserts that the SU7 is exceptionally aerodynamic, boasting a drag coefficient of only 0.195 Cd, the most impressive among production vehicles.

In terms of dimensions, the SU7 spans an impressive length of 4997mm, a height of 1440mm, and a width of 1963mm. Lei Jun drew parallels with the spaciousness of a BMW 5 Series, positioning it as a full-size class vehicle surpassing the popular Tesla Model 3. Noteworthy features include a substantial 105-liter frunk and a 517-liter boot space.

The SU7 is available in two variants: the standard version and the Max edition. Three nature-inspired colors—Aqua Blue, Verdant Green (which, incidentally, has garnered my admiration), and Mineral Gray—provide distinct representations of the natural spectrum.

Performance & Technology The SU7 is offered in two iterations: the standard version and the Max edition. The Max variant boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system generating an astonishing 673 horsepower and achieving a rapid 0-100 km/h acceleration in a mere 2.78 seconds. The standard version, though still potent, features a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup with a 5.28-second 0-100 km/h time.

Xiaomi SU7 Electric Car Acceleration The Max edition impresses with its substantial 800km CLTC range, courtesy of its 101kWh CATL Kirin battery. Rapid charging is a highlight, with a gain of 220km range in just 5 minutes and an impressive 510km in a mere 15 minutes.

An extensive array of technology includes a 16.1-inch touchscreen, a 56-inch HUD, and a 7.1-inch instrument cluster, ensuring passengers are both informed and entertained. The 25-speaker sound system with Dolby Atmos further guarantees an immersive audio experience.

The vehicle boasts a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including automatic emergency braking, garnering a coveted 5-star safety rating.

Xiaomi emphasizes the integration of technology and ecology in the SU7, equipped with the latest Xiaomi HyperOS system, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. This ensures seamless software connectivity features, including the ability to mirror your phone or tablet. Notably, the SU7 accommodates users of Xiaomi Home IoT devices, allowing control of various smart home gadgets directly from the car, even with Apple products.

An exciting feature is the car’s self-driving mode, dubbed Xiaomi Pilot, powered by two Nvidia Orin-X chips boasting 508 TOPs computing power. The system incorporates 1 lidar, 3 radars, 11 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, facilitating highway driving, self-parking, and car summoning capabilities.

Availability and Pricing The Xiaomi SU7 is currently in the testing phase and is slated for an official launch in the first half of 2024. Pricing details will be disclosed soon.

During the launch event, Lei Jun articulated ambitious aspirations for Xiaomi’s foray into the automotive sector, aiming to secure a position among the top five car manufacturers within the next 15-20 years.
